Sturgis day 3 - Monument Valley to Moab (Riding the Moki Dugway!)
We FINALLY showed the young guns the Moki Dugway!
After one of the coolest nights of camping ever, we woke up with the sun overlooking Monument Valley, had some breakfast and coffee by the fire, then packed up to take the 4x4's back down to civilization to get back on the bikes and continue on our journey. The team from Monument Valley Safari made some stops along the way to show us some beautiful arches and viewpoints and it was an awesome way to start the day.
From Monument Valley, we only had about 160 miles to make it to our stay in Moab for the night, but we all knew at this point, that 160 miles could still be a long day with unpredictable fixes and challenges...and that it was.
Our main goal for the day was to get the whole group on the Moki Dugway and aside from a creative roadside fix at the top, everyone had a great time and enjoyed getting off of the beaten path while saving some time compared to the alternate route. We got to ride through some great roads full of twists, turns, and long sweepers, then eventually made our way to Blanding, Utah where we stopped at a lunch recommendation from our guy Don, called the Patio Diner. It was a classic diner with burgers, fries, shakes, etc. and was definitely a noteworthy stop. They through some grilled jalapeños on delicious burgers full of flavor and especially with the heat outside, this lunch stop was much needed.
Dom's 1958 Rigid Pan-Shovel chopper had taken a beating and his gas tank tab had broken the day prior, so we needed to find a welder asap. Josh sparked a conversation with a gentleman at the gas station on our way out of Blanding who pointed us in the direction of a local welder in Moab, so we hopped back on the bikes and ended up at "Grandpa's Garage" a community garage on the outskirts of Moab that offers up their space and tools to those who need a place to wrench on their machines! They do not do the work, but provide the space for you to do so and it was a really cool experience! "Grandpa" wasn't there that day, but his wife and some friends were and we were able to get Dom's bike up and running in a few hours before heading into Moab to grab some dinner at the Moab Grill and then rest up at a hotel. We had camped 2 nights in a row both days prior, so it was a much needed refresh having a real bed and a shower!
This was only the beginning and we still had plenty of ground to cover before making it to the Black Hills but good times were had by all and we were looking forward to the following days!
