Getting the carbureted bikes ready for Sturgis!
If we haven't told you already, we're riding carbureted bikes to Sturgis 2025! We picked up 3 bikes under $5,500 each and one by one, we got them ready for the 1,400 mile ride across the country after they have been sitting for years.
Lance picked up a 2005 Electra Glide, Gaylin a 2001 Road King, and Josh a 2001 Dyna Low Rider. They were all in need of differing levels of maintenance, but we figured we'd stay ahead of any potential issues and do the same thing to all 3 bikes maintenance-wise.
The basics
To start, we did complete 3-hole oil changes on all 3 bikes as well as new Mikuni 42 carburetors, FEULING vented dip sticks, brake fluid, and new cam chain tensioners. We also replaced the fuel lines, batteries, and tires to ensure all of the basics were covered. We found various other parts that needed replacing like the front motor mount on Josh's Dyna and swapped out accordingly.
Parts
This was the fun part! We each got to put our own flare into the new (to us) bikes and set them up to our needs for the long-haul ride ahead. For the most part, we just stuck to handlebars & risers, foot controls, seats, rear suspension, and air cleaners. Mostly bolt on parts that we know and trust for the journey ahead. We all had slightly different setups and made adjustments after mockups here and there.
The Journey Ahead
We had a blast throwing these together with some trial and error and up next, we're going to take them out on a day ride to put down some miles and make any necessary adjustments before hitting the road to South Dakota in just a few weeks!
