Highway 395 to Bishop | Lone Pine, Lake Sabrina, South Lake & More

US Highway 395 Road Trip to Bishop and Lake Sabrina

For the past few months and big trips alike, we have either been flying and renting EagleRider bikes or borrowing bikes after selling our old ones, so this trip the three of us finally got to take our own bikes out with all of our favorite parts on them! This one's been in the works for a bit and we were excited to explore some of Highway 395's glory.

On day 1, we ripped through triple digit temperatures in the Southern California desert making our way through Mojave, with our first stop in the town of Lone Pine. We got lunch at The Grill before making our way across the street to the Museum of Western Film History to check out some neat exhibits we've just passed by all of these years.

The ride to Bishop from home base is only about 250 miles and we left nice and early, so we had plenty of time to make our way there with some stops along the way. We pulled into Bishop just before 4pm, unloading our bags at the Elms Motel before turning right back around and riding up State Route 168 to explore some of Inyo County's hidden lakes.

California State Route 168 in Bishop winds through the stunning Eastern Sierra region, connecting the town of Bishop with the Sierra Nevada mountains. Known for its dramatic scenery and access to outdoor adventures like hiking and skiing, this route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. In Bishop itself, the highway passes through the heart of town, providing access to local businesses, restaurants, and historical sites. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply passing through, Route 168 offers a memorable journey through California's picturesque landscape.

We checked out Lake Sabrina and walked around for a bit before hopping back on the bikes and heading back down 168 to find the turnoff for South Lake, another scenic lookout. Despite only being 25 minutes or so outside of Bishop, the landscape up there is wildly different and the temperature was a good 15-20 degrees cooler than in town! We stopped by the Cardinal Village just to check things out and discovered that it was pizza night so we spoke with some of the workers and got some history on the village and surrounding areas. You won't know if you don't ask and we're glad we did!

Just as the sun began to set over the Sierra Nevadas, we pulled back into Bishop and walked just down the road to one of our favorite dinner joints in town, Whiskey Creek. There's nothing quite like a good 'ol steak after a great day on the road with more to go!
